I need good advises for furnishing for new wooden KDY boat. Does anyone know if there exists an article or any document on how to position fock sheets, halyards etc for good performance. And where to find good accessories suitable for KDY boat ? Toplicht perhaps ?

Thanks in advance,

Hallo Petri,

I will answer you as follows:
For our juniorboat we have no standard-mountings. The best will be looking for some boats and their individual arrangement and surching the best solution. A lot of boats you will find in Hamburg to our race SEASONS END dated 27. 28. august.
Naturally I can make some pictures from my boat and sending to you, but this only my opinion. Please give me an information, if you want some pictures.
The position of the fock sheets is on the sides and in the front of the cabin you can see it in our website www.folkejunior.de under Fotos and there Neubau 2003. The position is dependent on the design of the sail.
Perhaps you will find some other tips in the other fotos.
For the fock sheets a lot of boats are using the mounting for the Nordic Folkeboat from the Folkeboatcentralen in Kerteminde (Denmark).
For the halyards and so on nearly all boats have a bow behind the mast and over a block the ropes are running to some curry-pinches on the cabin. Nearly the same arrangement you will find in the Nordic Folkeboats.
We have no special firm, which produces special mountings for our juniorboat.
But you can ask the yard for new boats (only in denish language):
Skive Baadebyggerie
V / Kaare Weber
Fjordvej 35
DK 7800 Skive
or (in denish or english language):
Arne Jensen
Solsikkevej 38 b
DK 9900 Frederikshavn

Hoping I could help you and best wishes

Hartwig

Thank you very much for Your advices. I only have the original drawings I got from the Dansk Sejlunion and they do not specify these things. I think the fittings for the mast and boom would be the most difficult to find (?).

My last boat was a Nordic folkboat and Finnish folkboat association has an excellent newspaper called “F” full of articles on maintenance, racing and trimming issues. And also travel stories.

SEASONS END would be very interesting. Perhaps next summer?

Just to inform You the 4th pair of planks has set up to our new boat. The planking and framing is made by Jussi Norberg in Fiskars (a small village in southern Finland) and is ready appr end of february. After that impreg (flax oil) and several weeks settling. I am building the deck and finishing the boat and rigging next summer. I hope I can place the boat to our boatclubs small shanty for finishing work.

The boat is being made of Finnish pine on African Iroko. The frames will be made of oak. The deck will be made of traditional painted canvas on pine planking and cabin will be made of mahogany. I am going to raise the cabin height 10% (which is allowed by KDY 15 construction rules) to have enough space for a small window.

Hello Petri,
looks like you are making good progress with your boat. As to your intention
to have the deck in traditional painted canvas on pine planking – what kind of canvas and paint are you using. I might try it for my boat as well.

Best regards,

Juergen

Hello Juergen,

I bought a 6×1,75 sheet of cotton. Canvas should be quite dense and heavy: appr 300-400 gr / m2 minimum. A traditional cotton sail would be best but I found quite similar from a common canvas shop in Tallinn, Estonia. Hope it will be good. I am using a common oil paint. We have a paint factory “Uula” here in Finland making traditional flax (lein?) oil paints. See i.e.

http://www.uula.fi/suomeksi/saksa.html

I repaired the deck of my previous boat (folkboat) using similar method and the experience (result) was very positive. I used Uula “varnish paint” (“lakkamaali”). The cream shade of colour together with an old oak and mahogany was very beatiful.

Best regards

Petri
